What is 2019 Novel Coronavirus?

The 2019 Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) is a new respiratory virus first identified in Wuhan, China. Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses that cause illness ranging from the common cold to more severe diseases. Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS-CoV) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS-CoV) are also Coronaviruses.

How is it spread?

Coronaviruses are transmitted between animals and people. Emerging information suggests that person-to-person spread is also occurring, but it is still unclear how easily the virus spreads. Since the outbreak began, thousands of cases have been reported with 24 confirmed in Canada. At the time this post was published, the Public Health Agency of Canada  assessed the public health risk associated with the 2019 Novel Coronavirus for Canada as low.
