Meet Marisa Poropat, a hardworking and dedicated franchisee in Vancouver Fraser Valley, British Columbia embarking on her 11th year as a business owner. Marisa took a few minutes to share her story and how Jani-King has impacted her life.
What motivated you to become your own boss?
I started my Jani-King Franchise in September 2007. I was looking for a job that would be flexible with hours and days because I had been a stay-at-home mom for 6 years. At the time my husband was having health issues and had to stop working as well.
How did you make the decision to invest in a Jani-King franchise?
I knew friends who had a Jani-King franchise and they were doing very well. I sat down and asked them a million questions and everything seemed to line up with what I was looking for.
How has your business changed over the years?
That’s a good question! When I started I was thinking it would be a part-time job until our family situation improved but life had many changes in store for me. I became a divorced parent with 4 kids to raise 3 years after starting my Jani-King Franchise. I was so happy to have a job that made it easy for me to adjust my schedule to be home with the kids, to pay my bills with ease and keep me independent. I now have the opportunity to really shape my hours and choose the types of work I accept. It’s a great feeling.
My business has changed as my needs change. At one time I had 3-4 employees – it was a busy time! I had large contracts that needed more attention. Over the years I have chosen to work with smaller clients so it’s mostly just me with occasional help.
What is your secret to success?
Be proactive! That means letting them know its time to wax the floor before winter salt or window cleaning in the spring. If you stay one step ahead of their needs you make their life easier too because they know you are looking out for them.
